In Rome it was symbol of martial victory, crowning a successful commander during his triumph who was also receiving a golden laurel-shaped crown held over his head by a slave repeating the ritual words « memento mori » during the parade in order to remind him that glory is only a fleeting moment.
*Also used as a reward in sport competitions, the laurel wreath became an attribute of the emperor, representing his supreme power over the armies.
