*SPQR, an abbreviation for "Senatus Populusque Romanus" ("The Roman Senate and People" or more freely "The Senate and People of Rome"), is an emblematic abbreviated phrase referring to the government of the ancient Roman Republic.

*The pilum  was a javelin commonly used by the Roman army in ancient times. It was generally about 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) long overall, consisting of an iron shank about 60 centimetres (24 in) long with a pyramidal head. The shank was joined to the wooden shaft by a socket.

*Used by legionaries on top of a hill against opponents climbing it, once planted in their enemies’ shields, these could not get rid of them, even by shaking their shields, and had to fight without protection.
