*The boxed devil is a child’s toy made up of a figure that jumps out and gives you a surprise when the top of the box is raised in order to scare the person in front. The term “Jack in the box” is thought to have come from the English prelate Sir John Schorne in the 13th century, who is said to have locked a devil in a boot to protect the village of North Marston (Jack is short for John).
