*The department of Var is the historic cradle of scuba diving. In June 1943, during the occupation, scuba diving with an aqualung was born in Bandol. The town became the main place to discover the underwater world.
*It is in Bandol that Jacques-Yves Cousteau tested for the first time with Dumas and Tailliez, the regulator designed by Emile Gagnan in June 1943. The 3 men were living in Villa Barry along the sea in the west of the town and chose this place to try the aqualung. They became known as the "Mousquemers" (musketeers of the sea). The results surpassed all their expectations.
