*In 1925 Le Prieur saw a demonstration in Paris of a diver using a breathing apparatus invented by Maurice Fernez, consisting of a simple T-shaped rubber mouthpiece connected to a long tube down which air was pumped from the surface.

*Impressed, Le Prieur immediately conceived an idea to make it free of the tube to the surface pump by using Michelin cylinders as the air supply. He had invented the open circuit self-contained underwater breathing apparatus.

*Then, Emile Gagnan and Jacques Cousteau together invented the modern demand regulator used in underwater diving. Their invention allowed for the equipment known as the Aqualung, or self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA), enabling safer and deeper dives.
