*The term « Longest Day » was used the German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel to his aide Hauptmann Helmuth Lang on April 22, when he came to check the Atlantic Wall. According to him, World War II would be won or lost on these beaches:  « if you think the Allies will arrive in good weather, using the shortest way, you are wrong… The first 24 hours of the invasion will be decisive...The fate of Germany depends on the outcome...for the Allies, as well as Germany, it will be the longest day ».

*In the military, D-Day is the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated. The best known D-Day is during World War II, on June 6, 1944 (the day of the Normandy landings) initiating the Western Allied effort to liberate western Europe from Nazi Germany
