*The « Pointe du Hoc » is a promontory with a 90 feet cliff overlooking the English Channel on the north western coast of Normandy. During World War II it was the highest point between the American sector landings at Utah Beach to the west and Omaha Beach to the east. The German army fortified the area with concrete bunkers and gun pits. On D-Day, the United States Army Ranger Assault Group attacked and captured this heavily defended position after scaling the cliffs and then held it against repeated counterattacks. But when the Rangers made it to the top at Pointe du Hoc, they discovered that the artillery battery, had been removed. Their heroic actions helped to establish an Allied foothold in France.
